Cypress Creek Bridge Repair

Project Update:

TEMPORARY DAYTIME FULL CLOSURES SCHEDULED ON SOUTH CHURCH STREET AT BRIDGE OVER CYPRESS CREEK

Daily full closure and signed detour in place at bridge beginning at 6 a.m. on April 8

SMITHFIELD – Starting next week, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are scheduled to implement a series of daytime full closures for the bridge rehabilitation project on Route 258/10 Business over Cypress Creek in Smithfield, with a signed detour in place.

Starting as early as Monday, April 8, crews will close the remaining westbound lane on South Church Street at the bridge from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with a signed detour in place. While the bridge will reopen to westbound traffic each evening, the previously existing, long-term closure for eastbound traffic will remain closed at the bridge using the existing detour.

To perform the removal of existing bridge beams, crews will place large lifting cranes and heavy equipment at the bridge necessitating the daytime closures. Extracted beams will be loaded individually and placed on a series of flatbed transport trucks and removed from the project site. Weather permitting, the daily closures are estimated to be in place through April 12, or until all beams have been removed.

A temporary signed detour for westbound traffic will instruct motorists at the bridge to turn around and utilize the Route 258/10 bypass via South Church Street/Benns Church Boulevard. Eastbound traffic will remain closed, with motorists directed to utilize the existing detour to Route 258/10 bypass via Main Street and South Church Street/Benns Church Boulevard.

To ensure safety of the public and construction crew, the bridge will be under pedestrian flagger control, with access closed to all pedestrians and cyclists during the periods when beams are being loaded onto the transport trucks.

Access to all businesses and private residences on either side of the bridge on South Church Street will remain accessible during this closure.

This construction work is weather- and schedule-dependent; therefore, this schedule is subject to change.
